Management can be instrumental in fostering greater levels of meaningful connection among workers. One of the ways you can do this is by adopting and formalizing a “zero-tolerance” approach to any abusive, underhand, or discriminatory behavior in your workplace. Work with your HR team to structure and communicate this policy.
Formal recognition programs (such as reward and incentive programs) are relatively common in the modern workplace. However, informal recognition is one of the most powerful motivators.
As a leader, actively seek opportunities to give a “shout out” to someone who has done a great job and encourage your colleagues and line managers to do the same. In a company of almost any size, it’s possible for employees to feel that they’re merely a number in the human resources system and that senior management doesn’t have their interests at heart. Even the most compassionate leader can become caught up in the day-to-day stresses of running the business and neglect to consider the wellbeing of their employees.
As a manager, if you detect a change in mood or demeanor in a team member, take a moment to approach them for a quiet word. Or, next time you notice one of your people struggling with a work-related issue, for example, a difficult customer or a looming deadline, pause to let them know you’re there, offer to help, or even intervene if appropriate. This is one of the most effective ways to reinforce the kind of behavior you want to encourage in your business. People need to know that their managers care about them as human beings.
When someone is experiencing a personal problem, stress, or bereavement, there’s nothing worse than being ignored. Often, co-workers simply don’t know the right thing to say to them or how to respond. What’s often forgotten is that people who are suffering don’t want or expect someone to tell them what to do or think; they just want to feel acknowledged and comforted.
As we touched on in the previous point, one of the easiest ways to support someone who is struggling is to offer to step in and ease their workload. For example, if you know that a co-worker is caring for a sick or elderly family member, why not offer to swap shifts with them now and again so that they can attend to their care duties without worrying about missing work or having their paycheck docked?

Allowing people time off to support selected charitable causes close to their hearts is a great way to endorse and build a spirit of compassion in your organization. Even better, why not offer paid volunteer days? Giving people the opportunity to take a day off once a year to spend working at a charity of their choice isn’t only a great way to show your compassion, but it’s also a highly effective way of team building.
Earlier, we stated the importance of adopting a “zero-tolerance” policy to any form of dishonest, unkind, or discriminatory behavior in the workplace. However, that doesn’t mean there should be no place for well-intended criticism.
To feel truly valued and heard, employees need a safe place to air their views and concerns. As part of this effort, leaders should invite feedback and constructive criticism about their behavior and decision-making.
Both managers and employees usually have mixed feelings about the annual performance review season. When performance reviews are well-planned and executed, they can help establish a positive culture of transparency, feedback, and ongoing learning and development in your business.
Your human resources team likely provides you with instructions, training, and templates to guide you through the review process. Webb was born in 1858 into a well-off family, but in 1887, as part of her research into urban poverty, she dressed up in a ragged skirt and buttonless boots to work in a London textile factory. Her account of her experiences, Pages from a Work-Girl’s Diary, caused a sensation. It was unheard of for a member of “respectable” society, especially a woman, to have firsthand experience of living and working among the destitute.
Her empathy inspired her to campaign for improved factory conditions. Later in life, she founded the London School of Economics.
Bryan Stevenson is an acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, incarcerated, and condemned. He’s the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. This human rights organization has won major legal challenges, eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, and confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill.
Stevenson has won multiple cases at the US Supreme Court, including a ruling protecting condemned prisoners who suffer from dementia. Stevenson and his team have won reversals, relief, and release from prison for over 140 wrongly condemned prisoners on death row.
In the late 1970s, Moore dressed up as an 85-year-old woman to find out what life was like as an elder. She put on makeup that made her look much older, wore dirty glasses so she couldn’t see properly, wrapped her limbs and hands with bandages and splints to simulate arthritis, and wore uneven shoes so she limped. For several years, she visited North American cities in this disguise, attempting to walk up and down subway stairs, open department store doors, and use can openers with her bound hands.
Using her experiences, Moore took product design in a new direction, inventing new products for use by elders, such as thick rubber-handled potato peelers and other utensils found in almost every kitchen today, which people with arthritic hands can easily use. She also became an influential campaigner for the rights of senior citizens and helped get the Americans with Disabilities Act passed into law.
The importance of treating one another more compassionately – and not just in the workplace but in all aspects of our lives – has never been greater.
