As a third-party Delivery Service Partner (DSP) for Amazon, Fresno Logistics operates with over 200 employees—primarily drivers—delivering packages across Central California and the Bay Area. As the company expanded both its headcount and geographic footprint, it faced a familiar challenge: how to recruit and retain reliable talent in a competitive labor market.
“For our drivers, flexibility is everything,” said Brian Spencer, General Manager of Fresno Logistics. “They’re using apps to schedule, route deliveries, and request time off. Why shouldn’t pay be just as accessible?”
Like many Amazon DSPs, Fresno recognized the growing demand for more modern pay options. In 2024, Amazon announced a partnership with Payactiv to bring Earned Wage Access1 (EWA) to its network of DSPs, giving companies like Fresno the ability to support workers with faster, more flexible access to their earned wages.
With many employees early in their careers or supporting families, access to on-demand pay wasn’t just a nice-to-have—it was essential. Some workers relied on EWA to pay for gas before shifts. Others used it to avoid high-interest payday loans or bridge the gap between expenses and payday.
“I was trying to find a solution that didn’t put our people in a financial pinch,” Brian said.
“Payactiv’s low-cost, transparent structure really stood out. And for employees, some usage points are completely fee-free2.”
Fresno’s team found the Payactiv mobile app to be intuitive and a natural fit for their mobile-first workforce. “We already rely on apps for routing and scheduling,” Brian noted. “Now pay is just as seamless.”
Fresno’s operations include three different companies with varying pay schedules—a potential administrative headache when introducing new benefits. But Payactiv’s integration with their payroll provider made setup easy.
“We probably spend less than an hour a month managing Payactiv,” Brian said. “Even with employees working across multiple entities, it’s simple. The weekly transaction summaries even help us prepare for payroll.”
The benefits of EWA go far beyond convenience. For Fresno Logistics, offering access to earned wages has become a competitive advantage in hiring and a key to retention.
“Some of our employees rely on EWA to get gas for their routes or to handle unexpected expenses,” Brian explained. “They’re more likely to stay because they feel supported, and they show up more focused and productive.”
He recalled one moment that stuck with him: a new employee, a father of seven, approached him midweek, struggling to make it to payday. “I really need my money,” he told Brian. “I can’t wait until Friday.” Rather than turn him away, Brian introduced him to Payactiv. With just a few taps, the employee accessed nearly half of his already-earned wages—enough to bridge the gap and avoid a costly payday loan. “The answer wasn’t no,” Brian said. “The answer was: here’s a better way.”
As e-commerce continues to drive demand for last-mile delivery, Fresno Logistics is preparing to grow. That means continuing to recruit and retain a new generation of drivers who value flexibility, purpose, and support.
“We’re competing with gig economy platforms like Uber and DoorDash, where workers get paid after each shift,” Brian said.
“Payactiv helps us offer that same sense of immediacy, but with the benefits of full employment like PTO, healthcare, and retirement plans. It makes us an employer of choice.”
For Fresno Logistics, Payactiv isn’t just a tool—it’s a differentiator in a tight labor market and a vital part of the employee experience.
1 Earned Wage Access requires employer participation. Employees can only access a portion of the wages they have earned to date.
2 To qualify, you must have one (1) successful direct deposit of $200 or more to the Payactiv Visa Card per pay period. If this qualification isn’t met, then a load fee of $2.49 will be charged.
