Money equals success. That is what seventeen-year-old Carl reminds himself every day he submits a job application. Carl is not alone. He is a member Generation Z (born between 1995–2010), the largest generational cohort in America. Gen Z is still young—currently its oldest members are around age twenty-two—and they’re entering today’s workforce in high numbers, a trend that will continue for years to come.
If you are in the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry, an industry full of young people, you need to know how to attract the top candidates—the best Carls out there. To meet Carl’s needs, you must understand Gen Z’s mindset, principles, and motivations.
According to the Workforce Institute, “when applying for their first full-time job, pay continues to be the most important thing to Gen Z (54%).” This pay prioritization leads Gen Z workers to expect a seamless payroll experience. With Earned Wage Access (EWA) tools and several different payroll options, PayActiv offers quick wage solutions.
Self-esteem and earned wages are valued equally by this generation. Giving your workers access to wages when they need it provides both by boosting self-esteem and reducing financial stress.
Gen Z grew up with the internet, tablets, computers, and smartphone technology. This generation is accustomed to ordering food, obtaining rideshares, and shopping with their smartphone apps. In fact, 96 percent of Gen Zers own a smartphone, and more than half spent over ten hours a day on an electronic device. PayActiv and the features that accompany it are accessed by a seamless smartphone app, allowing employees to get paid, request EWA, and deploy saving tools all in one place.
With food, clothing, rideshares, and appointment scheduling at their fingertips, Gen Z is used to living life on demand. These workers are delighted by instantaneous results—in fact, many expect it. At the end of a long shift, Carl wants to be able to whip out his smartphone and see his day’s wages dropped right into his account. Best of all, PayActiv integrates with existing services like Uber and Amazon, putting all that instant delight in one place.
This generation grew up during the Great Recession. They are looking to start saving for retirement early and are open to tools such as financial counseling or budget calculators to make big financial decisions. Gen Z are planners. PayActiv’s budgeting tools and holistic financial wellness resources are examples of assets Gen Z workers need to meet their long-term financial goals.
To attract top Gen Z QSR talent, employers need to not just meet the needs of prospective employees but to exceed those needs. By providing immediate access to wages through PayActiv, among additional financial wellness resources, you are already on your way to recruiting the best Carls Gen Z has to offer.
